Frieda finds each step of quilt making, from beginning to end, a real challenge. Every part has its own attraction from the pure creativity involved in conceiving and designing a new quilt, to the machine quilting and the picking of colors in the project. She loves to piece and to use fusing techniques. She has found that by fusing smaller pieces she can work out design issues, then she likes to make a bigger bolder statement and piece the same quilt in a large format. Most of her work is machine quilted and nature inspired. Everyday Frieda walks in a little woods near her home with her dog George. Much of what she sees there appears in her work.
She discovered hand dyeing fabric 16 years ago, and now works almost exclusively with her own hand dyed cottons and silks. "I love the dye process, and I particularly enjoy seeing the colors emerge from the wet fabric."
"Frieda was a most inspiring teacher with well organized classes, informative classes. Each of her classes provided our members with a wealth of information which was applicable not only to fusible quilting, but, in many cases, to traditional quilting as well. She possesses an unusually wonderful sense of color and how to use it; our classes began with learning how to dye her fabulous fabrics. What wonderful results we had.
Frieda is an excellent teacher and a very nice, accommodation person. She provides clear, understandable instructions along with demonstrations. She gives individual guidance to students as needed but also encourages students to use their own creativity.
Frieda was extremely well organized, communicating well with us preceding her visit, and following through on all of her contract obligations. She was also very helpful in helping us select a variety of classes appropriate for our members’ needs. Additionally, her lecture on her "Walks with George" was interesting, amusing, and extremely well received by our members."
